Fall is Green

Updated: Nov 30, 2022

Unfortunately, fall is coming to an end. I actually started this poem at the beginning of fall this year, and haven't gone back to it until very recently. I first gained inspiration while on a hayride with my family (hence the last stanza), and throughout this fall, I have really come to appreciate some of the things I haven't appreciated before. I tried to incorporate many ideas into "Fall is Green", but one of the most eminent is a take on the beauty of death, as well as change. This is definitely a shorter poem, but I hope y'all enjoy it!

Fall is green

In summer, the leaves are green

The trees, the grass, the flowers

Everything is alive

But everything is the same

I got green converse this summer

for school that starts in fall

I figured out that after all

forest green was what described the color that fit me most

In the summer I long for leaves to replace the rays

To smell apple cider instead of freshly cut grass

To look up and around and see more than the bright green scenery

Spring brought and left behind for the upcoming months

To see the leaves that never really change

The green leaves that are slowly dying

The leaves cut off from life support

But dying can be so beautiful

It is when green is orange, red, yellow, and brown

It is when I look up to see the green leaves

But the only thing that has changed

Is that the leaves are going through a stage of deprivation

Green has been painted

The sky is dotted with orange and red

As is the sidewalk that I step on to get to the bus stop

The sidewalk that my neighbor steps on to take their dog on a walk

The sidewalk my father steps on to go to work

When we step we are filled with nostalgia in the crunch of leaves

The sidewalk once dotted with green grass clippings

Is now the most abundant shade of green

Fall is green apples and pumpkins with green stems that are really brown

This fall

This autumn

I sat on a stack of hay

The pieces entwining themselves into my overalls

I look up and see a dark green

I look out and see fields of green covering falls signature

I look down and see my green converse

Fall is green
